Biography

Biography

Judy Nerat is serving her first term representing Delta, Dickinson and Menominee counties in the Upper Peninsula. During this time, Nerat has:

  • Worked to reform state government by voting to slash the salaries of lawmakers – including her own – and other top elected officials by 10 percent. This is part of Nerat's commitment to cut state spending and ensure elected officials are sharing in the sacrifice that families across Michigan are making. Nerat also supports a plan that will end free lifetime health care for lawmakers.
  • Worked hard to create more good-paying jobs for U.P. residents. In order to attract and protect these jobs, she is a strong supporter of the "Hire Michigan First" plan to ensure that when taxpayer dollars are used to create jobs, Michigan workers get first crack at those jobs.
  • Fought to protect Michigan's majestic natural resources. Her first bill, which is now law, requires any hunting land sold by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to be replaced with an equal amount of new hunting land. This plan ensures that generations to come will have a place to enjoy our state's great outdoors and a special U.P. tradition.
  • Taken a stand against elder abuse by voting for a package of bills that will strengthen consumer protections for seniors and increase penalties for those who abuse, neglect or financially exploit them.

Before coming to the House, Nerat served two terms on the Menominee County Road Commission. She was appointed to the Commissioners' Committee for the County Road Association of Michigan, where she served as Chair. The County Road Association of Michigan recognized Nerat for her outstanding service as a commissioner in 2004.

Nerat is a small business owner and entrepreneur, and is a certified nursing assistant who has cared for seniors at an assisted living home.

A mother of two and grandmother of four, Nerat has lived in the Village of Wallace for 36 years. She is a hunter and an avid outdoorswoman, and is a member of Holy Redeemer Church in Birch Creek.
